Conductor Lorin Maazel passed away on July 13 at age 84. Many don't realize that Mr. Maazel was American, born in France to parents from the United States. He began conducting at age NINE, and at various times along the way served as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. At the time of his death, he was preparing for this year's Castleton Festival, named for the Virginia town in which his farm is located.
