Spanish conductor Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos has passed away from cancer at the age of 80. While he didn't attract as much attention as some of his contemporaries, Fruhbeck was recognized worldwide for his abilities as a conductor. New Englanders are probably most familiar with him from his many seasons of guest conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra at its summer home at Tanglewood. Most recently he was the chief conductor of the Danish National Symphony and conductor emeritus of Spanish National Orchestra. The New York Times' obituary, which contains an excellent summary of his career, may be found here. And click here for the Wikipedia article about him.
